O'Neil was a student in high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm for her performances. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she experienced significant defeats in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. The judges were astonished at the result and exhorted fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the bottom three once in the future. The judge Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
